Giving women the information they need to make safe choices

More than 20 million women resort to unsafe abortion each year. An estimated 47,000 women die in the process and 8 million need urgent medical attention. Our teams frequently encounter women suffering the effects of incomplete or “botched” abortions.

We provide post-abortion care wherever we work in order to ensure immediate life-saving medical care for women suffering complications from an unsafe abortion and to offer the counseling and opportunity to learn about family planning to prevent a future unintended pregnancy. This may start with a call or getting in touch with our team. If you would like to speak to us, get in touch for confidential chat today.

What is post-abortion care?

Post-abortion care is immediate life-saving medical care for women suffering complications following a spontaneous miscarriage or unsafe abortion.

Post-abortion care involves a small medical or surgical procedure to ensure that the womb is completely empty, but may also involve treating an infection or injury depending on the situation.

We recognise that having an abortion can affect both emotional and physical well being, and we offer counselling for women. It’s our duty to ensure we provide the best help possible to our clients.

Our goal is to educate and empower women so that every child she has is by choice, not chance. No woman should have her life or health at unnecessary risk and we are here to support women in accessing safe choices

What to expect after an abortion

Although there is usually a little pain and bleeding, physical recovery after an abortion happens fairly quickly for most women.

We are here to make sure all our clients are physically healthy following any appointment or procedure with us.

Our team is also on hand to offer emotional support with any concerns you may have. If any concerns or questions arise, please get in touch with our friendly call centre staff at any time for a confidential chat, we are here to help.

Abortion aftercare

If you’ve recently had an abortion, here are a few pieces of advice about aftercare and recovery.

You may have symptoms of nausea, vomiting and tiredness for a few days immediately after the abortion. This is normal. Tender breasts may take a week to 10 days to disappear. You may feel more comfortable if you wear a supportive bra and apply cold ice packs to your breasts. Take painkillers, if necessary for the pain.

Your next menstrual period will begin 4-6 weeks after your treatment. If you have not had a period 6 weeks after your treatment, you should take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, we recommend contacting our team immediately. It’s important to remember that any bleeding immediately after your treatment is not a period.

We recommend a couple of days of rest after abortion, but generally, most women will be physically fit and well enough to return to normal activities within a day or two.

Along with the physical symptoms of post-abortion, it is not uncommon for some women to experience emotions, such as sadness or guilt. If this happens we recommend that you speak you speak with someone or schedule a post-abortion counselling appointment with our team.
